Health fads come and go. It’s wheatgrass shots in the news one day, then an overpriced exercise machine the next. It can be hard to figure out what’s legit and what’s a little bit dubious.
But habits that stick around the longest are often the ones that you enjoy the most and cost the least – like a delicious smoothie or a swim in the ocean.
Wellbeing doesn’t come from the kinds of things you do once (and hope to live off the benefits for the rest of your life). It’s an apple a day, not just an apple, full stop. They’re habits you stick with, reassess, and update when needed to make sure they fit your current lifestyle.
We’re looking at some of our favourite healthy habits and financial wellbeing tips, so you can improve your physical, mental and financial health.
1. Be a smooth mover
Some mornings, there’s nothing you want more than a delicious smoothie from the local café. But making your own at home can help you save on sugar and money. You can buy fresh or frozen fruit from your greengrocer or supermarket (whatever’s cheaper!) to make tasty smoothies from the comfort of home. Staying healthy and getting more value from your spend – we reckon it’s a win-win.
2. Live the fit life
Okay, hands up who pays for multiple gym memberships? Now, more importantly, who actually uses multiple gym memberships? If you’re nailing it with multiple visits a week, then power to you. But if there’s a membership you haven’t touched it may be time to say goodbye. We get it, sometimes you need separate memberships for your yoga and your HIIT class. But you can often save money and still get your sweat-on by paying for bulk session passes and spreading them out over several weeks instead. There are also programs that allow you to go to multiple gyms or studios on the same membership. Want to make your exercise free (or close to it)? Try free videos online, running or swimming at your local pool or the beach for a workout that is both physically and financially effective.
3. Green your world
Did you know that plants have been proven to improve your mental and emotional health? They can help you destress, be more productive and think creatively. So, we don’t blame you for wanting to turn your house into a veritable jungle. The best thing about plants though, is that they grow. Instead of thinking big with one giant (and very expensive) plant, learn how to propagate your own by growing plants from cuttings, and develop your green thumb alongside your green notes.
4. Bankfulness
Sure, mindfulness is often an over-used term, but it's really just the daily act of being present and making conscious choices. Nothing wrong with that! You can use mindfulness as a form of meditation, keeping you centred and in the moment, and you can also use it as a way to experience your life with purpose. Making mindful choices – from what to eat for dinner to whether you really need that big purchase – can help rid you of that feeling of FOMO (or buyer’s remorse!) because you’re embracing what really matters.
5. Build a budget for healthy money habits
Building a budget and sticking to it is probably the healthiest habit of all. A good budget gives you the flexibility to do the things you want in life, get where you want to go and even splurge on the things that make you feel good. If you’re ready to make a budget (without the complex spreadsheet formulas) then you can use our budget planner. Just pop in a few bits of information and let us take care of the rest.
