How does Confirmation of Payee work?

How does Confirmation of Payee work?

Confirmation of Payee is a third-party banking service that checks the account details you enter for a new payee and tries to match the account name you've entered with the account name held by the recipient's bank. Confirmation of Payee is coming soon to ANZ Plus.

Once Confirmation of Payee is available, it'll check the details you enter before you make a payment to a new payee or add a payee as a contact.

When Confirmation of Payee checks the details you've entered it'll return one of these four statuses:

  • Account match – the details are a match
  • Close match – the details are very similar
  • No match – the details don't match
  • Unable to confirm – the details could not be confirmed

You can complete your payment regardless of what Confirmation of Payee returns (unless the account you are paying to has been closed), but remember it's there to help protect you, so please think twice and make sure you know who you're paying and stay scam safe.

Your account details

When a person pays you, their bank may also use Confirmation of Payee to validate your account details. To avoid confusion, it's important to pass on your correct Account Name when providing your BSB and account number. You can find all your account details by tapping on the Profile icon and selecting Account Details.

To protect your privacy, if someone enters your details incorrectly your Account Name won't be shared. They will be notified that the match has been unsuccessful.

Confirmation of Payee uses a central matching service which is an initiative of Australian Payments Plus (AP+).
