Your questions answered

Applying

Yes. A credit rating or history plays an important part in assessing credit card applications, but it’s not the deciding factor. Your employment history, expenses, assets and liabilities are also considered.

No. If you have more than 12 months remaining on your visa, you are eligible to apply for an ANZ credit card.

When you apply for a credit card, we’ll conduct a credit check on you by requesting information from one or more credit reporting agencies.

You will find that this is standard practice across the industry.

Credit scores

Depending on which credit scoring agency you go to, you may get a different score. Meaning what is considered a ‘good’ credit score will vary from place to place.

Generally, your score will sit somewhere between 0 and 1,000 or 0 and 1,200, depending on which agency is calculating your score. No matter where you go, a higher number always means a better credit score.

Visit the Credit Smart website for more information on good credit scores and ratings.

The credit reporting bodies will provide you with one free credit report per year. Additional reports can be requested at a cost.

To obtain your credit report you’ll need to contact one or a combination of the credit reporting bodies.

Visit the Credit Smart website for more information

There is no quick fix, improving your credit score will take time. Getting on top of your repayments and ensuring they are made on time is a good place to start. For more tips on how to improve your score, visit the Credit Smart website.

How credit cards work

A credit card is a credit facility which allows you to borrow money from the bank to make purchases and get cash advances. Each credit card has a credit limit which is the amount you have been approved to spend on your card. Read “What is a credit limit” in our FAQ for more information on credit limits.

When you take out a credit card you agree to pay back the money you borrow plus any applicable interest, fees and charges. Learn more about ANZ’s interest rates, fees and charges.

When you make an eligible purchase with your ANZ credit card, you may have a period of time to repay the amount without being charged any interest. This is an interest-free period.disclaimer

Whether an interest free period is available and what period of time can vary. Please refer to our credit card education pages for more info.

The credit limit is the amount you have been approved to spend on your credit card.

  • From time to time there may be a debit made to your Credit Card Account, which, if processed, would temporarily result in the outstanding balance exceeding your credit limit.
  • ANZ has an informal overlimit facility to help you in these circumstances.
  • Please note an overlimit fee will be charged in these circumstances.
  • You can ask ANZ to decline certain transactions so that you don't exceed your credit limit.
  • Please refer to the ANZ Credit Cards Conditions of Use for further information.

You must be sure you will be able to repay a credit card before you take one out. If you miss a repayment due date you may have to pay interest and other fees and charges. It’s really important to understand your payment obligations and how credit card statements are structured. Our credit card education section contains a lot of useful information on your payment obligations and how credit cards work.

Yes. If you choose to only make the minimum monthly repayments, you’ll end up paying more interest and it may take longer to pay off or reduce your credit card balance. It could be tempting to simply pay this amount. But if you keep doing this, it could end up costing you much more in interest in the long run.disclaimer

Your statement should include a ‘minimum repayment warning’, which shows you two different scenarios.disclaimer Depending on how big your closing balance is, these two scenarios can be chalk and cheese. The first scenario gives an estimate of how long it could take you to pay off your credit card closing balance if you only make the minimum repayment each month and make no more purchases. It also provides an estimate of how much interest you could end up paying over that timeframe (assuming you make no new transactions, and fees and interest don’t change). The second scenario gives an estimate of how much you’d need to pay each statement period to pay off the closing balance in two years (assuming you make no new transactions, and fees and interest don’t change). This scenario includes an estimate of how much you could save in total interest charges.
