Cyber events, data breaches, scams and fraud activity present a significant challenge for us and for our customers. Criminals tricking people out of their money is an insidious problem we’re working hard to combat.

In 2022 Australians reported a record loss of $3.1 billion to scams alone. While this is a shocking figure, we know that the impact of scams reaches beyond just the money lost and can have a significant impact on wellbeing.

To help support and protect our customers, we’re continuing to make improvements to our technologies and processes to try and stop scams and fraud,as well as helping our customers understand what we can do together to prevent losses from happening.

The good news is it’s starting to make a real impact. The Australian Government’s latest National Anti-Scam Centre update reported $82.1 million in losses from October to December last year, down 43 per cent from the same quarter in 2022.

ANZ’s internal data shows a similar trend, a 43 per cent decrease in customer losses during the first quarter of this financial year, compared to the same period in the previous financial year. Still, there is no room for complacency.

Anyone losing any money to this kind of activity is something we want to help prevent. We can’t take our eyes off the ball, so we have a couple of things in the works to ensure Customer Protection remains front of mind for everyone.

Governance processes and education at all levels are essential to fostering a culture focused on security – both within the bank and within the communities we operate. ANZ has responded to the rapidly changing threat environment, reducing the likelihood of attacks and focusing on security risk.
