“It’s really about bringing your whole self to work, isn’t it?”

All signs point to love for Steve Aney and Brendan Wagner, who after meeting at ANZ over fourteen years ago are tying the knot in April this year.

“We’ve been together fourteen years and we met through work,” shared Steve, a Senior Business Partner, in front of the ‘Signs of Love’ Sydney sculpture, on display in Bondi Beach for the 2019 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade. “We’re going to get married on Easter Saturday.”

A lot has happened for LGBTIQ+ inclusion both in the fourteen years Steve and Brendan, have been together. Thirteen years ago our staff started marching in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade, and twelve years ago we founded our Pride Network.

Steve and Brendan have experienced support for their relationship from their colleagues across ANZ. “There’s been absolutely no discrimination. We’ve been well regarded and well accepted I would say,” said Brendan, a Project Manager at ANZ.

“It’s really about bringing your whole self to work, isn’t it?” Brendan continued. “You can be who you are and what you are at work without having to worry about judgement.”

Steve agreed. “It has quite an impact on your personality if you have to hide who you are,” he said.

This year ANZ took a little bit of Mardi Gras and all that it represents to different parts of Australia. The ‘Signs of Love’ sculpture that Steve and Brendan stood in front of on Bondi Beach pointed to 123 Oxford Streets around the country.
