Making the Most of It - One Grad's Story

2021-03-04 13:28

When Scott Sause’s family immigrated from Papua New Guinea to New Zealand, he knew he wanted to make most the opportunities given to him by his parents – and the ANZ Graduate Programme played an important role in making that happen.

Scott, now an ANZ Analyst, Strategic Execution, grew up in Port Moresby, where he saw the effects of poverty first hand, and believed from a young age that financial literacy was a key skill to help people improve their lives and achieve their goals.

“When you grow up on that side of the world, you get exposed to poverty, and you also get inspiration from people that have been successful by being a bit more financially literate – so that’s always kind of stuck with me,” Scott said.

“Joining ANZ as a Graduate has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made."

Scott took the opportunities given to him and studied operations and supply chain management, market research, and economics at university, before entering ANZ’s Graduate Programme.

“Joining ANZ as a Graduate has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” he said.

“I’ll always remember my Grad days as some of the most important in my career - my manager at the time made a plan for me to gain experience in different areas of the bank after we discussed what I wanted to learn, and we planned my year accordingly.”

Scott said being on the Graduate Programme isn’t without its challenges – members are exposed to multiple areas of the bank throughout the year to give them a good understanding of how the many different departments cooperate.

“Each time I became familiar with new systems, processes and desired outcomes, while also building new relationships,” he said.

“But those challenges had benefits as well – I now feel better prepared to collaborate with different teams across the bank, and this diverse experience also helped me realise the direction I want to take my career in - and led me to apply for the role I’m in now.

“Even in such a large organisation like ANZ, I was amazed by the support I received from colleagues – I’m incredibly grateful to my Graduate Programme Manager, Senior Managers, Graduate Coach, Mentors and my Grad Buddy, who were always there when I needed support.”

Now, his career instils in him a sense of pride.

“My family are definitely really proud. When they migrating to New Zealand, my parents made a big sacrifice for myself and my brother to be educated here – but I think they’re really happy that I’ve made the best of the opportunities I’ve been given.”

Applications for the 2022 Graduate Programme are open now and close on the 30th of August 2021.
