ANZ today announced the appointment of Sam Garland as Group General Manager, Internal Audit, reporting to the Chair of the Audit Committee, Christine O’Reilly, with an internal management reporting line to ANZ Chief Executive Officer, Shayne Elliott.
Mr Garland has worked in professional services for 20 years and has deep expertise in the financial services sector. He will join ANZ from PwC Australia where he has been the Banking and Capital Markets Leader for several years, where he was responsible for leading PwC’s relationships with clients to provide assurance and advice on risk management, regulation and complex change.
Commenting on the appointment, Mr Elliott said: “I am pleased to appoint Sam to this important role. His seniority and deep expertise in financial services ensures he is well placed to provide the Board and our Executive Committee with independent and objective assurance of our operations.”
Mr Garland succeeds Paul Orton, who will retire after 14 years at ANZ. Mr Orton has been a trusted leader and demonstrated unquestionable integrity throughout his many leadership roles at ANZ, and in particular while leading Group Internal Audit since 2021.
The appointment is subject to meeting regulatory requirements. Mr Garland will be based in Melbourne and commences in the role in early 2025.
