Dweck: you’re not a growth mindset person (and here’s why)

CEO, ANZ & Psychologist and Best-Selling Author

Nobody has a pure growth mindset, according to the popular author Carol Dweck – no, not even you.

“I think there's a misconception people think they're one or the other,” ANZ CEO Shayne Elliott said on video.

"It turns out that we're all a mixture [of mindsets], often and depending on the environment we’re in.” - Dweck

Dweck agreed, saying "you hear a lot of people saying ‘I'm a growth mindset person’. It turns out that we're all a mixture, often and depending on the environment we’re in.”

Dweck said shifters of mindset include shifting out of your comfort zone or hit an obstacle at work.

“Or you [could] meet someone who is a lot better than you at something you thought you were really good at,” she said. “That could put you into more of a fixed mindset.”

“What you have to learn over time by taking this journey is to understand what triggers you back into a fixed mindset and how to return to a place of growth.”

According to Dweck, in a fixed mindset you believe your basic abilities are immovable – “you have a certain amount and that's it,” she said.

“But when you're in more of a growth mindset you believe those abilities, those talents, even your intelligence can be developed through hard work, good strategies and lots of help and input from others.”

“It doesn't mean people don't come with different talents,” she said. “It doesn't mean people don't have different levels of ability at one point - but it means you can grow.

The conversation also touched on how companies can use their mindset of their staff to benefit everyone. Watch the video above to find out more.
