Large-scale, fundamental change at businesses led by technology is less about the tools and more about a change in mindset among leaders, according to ANZ Group Executive Digital Banking Maile Carnegie.

Speaking to ANZ as part of The ANZ Way podcast series as ANZ undertakes its New Ways of Working transformation, Carnegie said from her perspective digital tools are one of the least-important parts of a change fundamentally about leadership.

“I don’t want to… demean the New Ways Of Working by trying to suggest technology is the core of it,” she said.

"For me [workplace change] is so much more about a fundamentally new leadership construct.”  - Maile Carnegie

“For me it is so much more about a fundamentally new leadership construct and teaching new leadership, collaboration and management tools. The technology is there for the ride.”

Carnegie said the change needed was rewiring those within the business to take advantage of new and developing technology - as a way enhance the experience for customers, employees and shareholders.

“The thing for me that’s been really exciting is the openness of both my boss but also my peers,” she said.

“I think it’s relatively rare these days in Australian business for a leadership team to both have courage but also humility – humility to learn but also courage to try new things in a meaningful way.”

She also touched on the kind of talent needed for a transformation and the culture change underway at ANZ. Listen to the podcast above to find out more.
