Humans are stubborn creatures. Even when volcanoes erupt, tsunamis hit or tornados destroy cities and villages, we don’t leave. We stay and rebuild, hopefully stronger and more prepared for mother nature’s fury than before.

This persistence and resilience is admirable, but the cost is real. Natural disasters often destroy homes, landscapes and families with little mercy and the financial burden created by a natural disaster can be crippling to an economy.

The earthquake that devastated the already poverty-stricken people of Haiti in 2010 would have taken a lifetime to rebuild. Thanks to the $US13.5 billion donated to various charities from around the world, the people of Haiti are getting back on their feet.

"The financial burden created by a natural disaster can be crippling to an economy."

As the severity of natural disasters is often measured in loss-of-life, the deeper, human costs associated go beyond the financial.

Explore our interactive infographic to appreciate the profound scale of a natural disaster, the massive costs involved and who is most at risk.
