Responding to customer demand in a quick and effective manner is the key to successfully working the agile way, ANZ’s Gerard Florian says.
Speaking to bluenotes on video, ANZ’s Group Executive, Technology said ultimately the customer would decide if the system is a success.
"To have technology working one way and the rest of the bank working differently doesn’t make sense.” - Gerard Florian, ANZ Group Executive, Technology
“Agile is all around trying to, ultimately, do good work quickly,” he said. “The quickly bit we all get, we need to get things done. The idea of good is all about what the customer wants.”

Earlier in May ANZ announced a new approach to managing and running its business in a bid to improve the way the bank responds to customer needs, empower staff and improve productivity.
The bank will adopt a ‘scaling-agile’ philosophy – an approach which originated in the tech industry – across its Australian division over the coming year.
Florian said a recent executive delegation in Europe studying the philosophy taught him the importance of an organisation-wide approach.
“To have technology working one way and the rest of the bank working differently doesn’t make sense,” he said. “We need to think business wide.”
Florian said there was no silver bullet for implementing agile but ensuring there was a melting pot of diverse ideas was vital.
“It’s about encouraging curiosity,” he said. “It’s about encouraging people to think a little differently, to speak up, to challenge ideas in a very respectful and structured way.”
Florian also touched on the benefits of agile working on staff engagement. Watch the video above to find out more.

A couple of months ago the CEO of my company declared all roles should be flexible. We've had policies on flexible working for a number of years but usage was sporadic and very much depended on a “Leadership Lottery” - if you had a leader who "got it" then flex was just part of the day to day norms and no big deal.
