The following case studies illustrate some of the benefits derived from our work to reduce the social and environmental impacts of the goods and services we purchase.
ANZ's relationship with its property and facilities manager Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) demonstrates how our work with suppliers can influence the practices of organisations further down the supply chain.
JLL has replicated ANZ's supply chain management model for 51 of its own suppliers who are involved in ANZ business and have a significant impact on ANZ's energy, waste and recycling footprint.
JLL has written to them, explaining ANZ's procurement approach and requested them to complete ANZ's Sustainability Self Assessment Tool. Feedback from JLL suppliers has to date been very positive with 65% replying with self-assessments.
In January 2007, JLL completed the ANZ Sustainability Self-Assessment Tool and provided a 12 month action plan, encompassing not only improvement plans for JLL, but also for its second tier providers.
JLL will continue to track feedback from its suppliers, instigate action plans to improve the performance of its suppliers and report on progress through monthly meetings with ANZ's Sustainable Procurement Manager.
Printing services supplier Lexmark completed the ANZ Sustainability Self-Assessment Tool in August 2006 and identified an opportunity to introduce a program at ANZ to recycle printer, fax and copier cartridges throughout the organisation.
The 'Cartridges 4 Planet Ark' program was launched throughout ANZ in September 2006 with over 1100 collection boxes deployed nationally. ANZ employees now dispose of used printer, fax and copier cartridges into these collection boxes. The used cartridges are then sent to Planet Ark and fully recycled.
The program is responsible for ANZ reducing landfill by over one tonne per month. Since the program started, the cartridges collected across the organisation has increased by over 78%, from 0.601 tonnes in September 2006 (605 items) to 1.073 tonnes in February 2007 (1000 items).
